Homemade Cold Remedies, Part 2

It is widely known that garlic wards off vampires. Did you also know that it wards off infections? Last week, I shared two stories about how garlic helped me and my daughter recover from two different illnesses. This week, I’m sharing with you our most used remedies. Today’s experiment: Infection Fighting Garlic, Part 2.

Garlic Drops for Ear Infection

Crush a fresh clove in one tablespoon of warm olive oil that is not hot. Let it stand for 5 minutes. Strain out the garlic and let it cool to room temperature. Administer 2 drops per ear, 3 times daily for at least 3 days. You can get a dropper at your pharmacy. Also, you can purchase a simple otoscope at Wal-Mart’s pharmacy for $15. It comes with a picture of what an ear infection looks like. I squirt any oil that’s left in the dropper into my daughter’s mouth. She always says, “Yum!”

Taking Garlic

This past year, I’ve gotten two throats infections. Each time, I took garlic at least once a day. To do this, I pressed the garlic and covered the pressed clove with honey (masks the strong garlic taste), then swallowed it down like a pill. I topped it off with a big glass of water. Raw garlic on an empty stomach can be painful.

Lymph Node Rub

3 tablespoons coconut oil

3 tablespoons olive oil

3 tablespoons minced garlic

This year, I got a throat infection that hurt like the dickens and gave me the white fuzzies on my tonsils (the doctor said it wasn’t strep though). Boy, were my lymph nodes swollen. I massaged this rub into the nodes under my jaw and that’s really when my recovery started. I also rubbed this onto the soles of my feet and put on socks. This made me STINK. Our whole house smelled like garlic, but it was very effective. And I was so sick the smell didn’t bother me until after I had recovered. My poor husband!

I’ve also heard that if you have an earache, you can peel a garlic clove, cut the tippy top off, and set it in the bowl (NOT canal) of your ear like a hearing aid. Wear it for an hour. The vapors from the clove will travel into your ear and do their magic.

Just so you know, I’m not a medical professional. I just like to save money in every quirkiest way possible. I don’t know much about herbology. I do know garlic works.

Have you ever tried garlic home remedies? Have you had positive or negative experiences?
